The numbers come first. The world crossed 1 terawatt of installed solar power in 2022, a decade after hitting the 100-gigawatt mark. The second terawatt took less than three years. The third arrived in 2026 — not even two years later — according to Fortune and Bloomberg reporting. BloombergNEF now projects more than 9 terawatts of global solar capacity by 2036.
The milestone is real. What it obscures is equally important.
China drove the acceleration — and is already hitting the wall
The first terawatt was built on subsidies from wealthy Western nations. As those programs matured, China took over as the primary engine of deployment. The result: global solar additions accelerated sharply, but the share reaching developing countries has largely stalled since 2020, according to BloombergNEF head of solar research Lara Hayim.
China's buildout has now outrun its own infrastructure. Transmission capacity and battery storage have not kept pace with panel installation, leading to curtailment — solar power generated but wasted — during peak hours. Analysts expect Chinese deployment to slow. Beijing's latest five-year plan targets a more than 50% increase in renewables consumption, not production, signaling the country is pivoting from building capacity to actually using it.
Bright spots in unexpected places
Disaggregate the global figures and smaller stories emerge. Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines have each recorded sharp increases in rooftop solar installations in recent years. Cuba and Lebanon have also seen rapid uptake. The number of countries with at least 1 gigawatt of installed solar reached 74 last year, up from 42 in 2020.
BloombergNEF expects developing countries' share of new solar deployment to resume growing from 2026 onward. By 2036, more than a quarter of all solar deployed globally will be in developing nations, while rich countries' share falls to roughly 20%. The constraint, Hayim notes, is not technology — it is 'the lack of accessible financing.'
Storage is the chokepoint
Markets with the highest solar penetration — Australia and California among them — already record negative electricity prices during daylight hours, a market signal that supply has outrun demand. Lithium-ion batteries are the logical answer, absorbing midday surplus and dispatching it in the evening. Australia has encouraged home battery adoption through subsidies. Pakistan and the Philippines are seeing battery adoption follow organically after their solar booms, with or without policy support.
'Without enough energy storage, you cannot maximize solar's potential,' Hayim said.

Three terawatts is an engineering achievement worth acknowledging. But the market has already voted on what comes next: storage. The solar curve flattens wherever batteries are absent, and no amount of panel manufacturing changes that arithmetic. The deeper lesson for policymakers — including those in Washington — is that subsidizing production without solving the grid-integration problem is a recipe for curtailment and wasted capital.
The countries best positioned for the next decade are those that let price signals, not mandates, guide the battery buildout. Where government gets out of the way and private capital prices storage correctly, the solar revolution continues. Where it doesn't, the panels sit idle at noon and the taxpayer eventually gets the bill.
