The memecoin machine does not pause for grief — or for facts.
After news circulated Tuesday that beloved country singer Dolly Parton had died, users rushed to popular memecoin platforms to launch tokens in her name. What followed was, in the words of Fortune, 'very un-Dolly-like behavior': a classic rug pull. Insiders promoted the tokens, attracted enough buyers, sold near the peak, and walked away as prices tumbled.
Most coins used variations of Parton's name — 'Dolly,' 'DollyParton,' and 'RIP Dolly Parton.' They launched on either Pump.fun, the popular Solana-based memecoin platform, or on Robinhood Chain, a newer blockchain network. 'Dolly' was among the best performers, reaching a market capitalization of nearly $480,000 within the first few hours before plummeting below $180,000.
A Familiar Playbook
The pattern is not new. According to Fortune, similar campaigns emerged after the deaths of former One Direction member Liam Payne, conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, and Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne. Memecoin creators have made a business model of seizing on high-profile moments — including deaths, real or reported — to manufacture short-lived hype.
The broader memecoin sector exploded as a defining narrative in 2025, when speculative capital flooded into internet-driven tokens, especially on Solana. Platforms like Pump.fun made it cheap and simple for almost anyone to create a token, turning memecoin trading into what Fortune describes as 'a high-speed attention market.' The overwhelming majority of such launches achieve little economic value and almost all collapse to near zero.
High-profile endorsements only deepened public skepticism. Two days before taking office in January 2025, President Donald Trump launched the TRUMP token, which briefly reached a market capitalization of roughly $8.7 billion before losing more than 90% of its value, according to crypto analytics provider CoinGecko. First Lady Melania Trump followed with the MELANIA token two days later, which reached a high of almost $9 and now trades at 11 cents. In February 2025, Argentine President Javier Milei publicly endorsed the LIBRA memecoin, which surged before collapsing within hours; a federal judge subsequently opened an investigation into fraud allegations, though Milei has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
Robinhood Chain Drawn In
Despite the sector's troubled reputation, memecoins quickly colonized Robinhood's new blockchain. Robinhood launched Robinhood Chain in July as a network aimed at tokenized stocks and other real-world assets, but memecoins became among its most actively traded assets almost immediately. Within days, Cash Cat — a token named after an early possible name for the brokerage — reached a market capitalization of roughly $150 million, according to CoinGecko.
CEO Times Take
Free markets tolerate speculation, and they should. But rug pulls are not speculation — they are fraud dressed in ticker symbols, targeting retail participants who arrive last and leave with the losses. The Dolly Parton episode illustrates a structural problem: platforms that make token creation nearly frictionless also make predatory extraction nearly frictionless. Capital rewards clear rules, and right now the memecoin corner of crypto has very few of them. The question for regulators and for the industry itself is whether the answer is smarter disclosure and liability — or whether the attention economy will keep writing the same ending every time a famous name trends.
