SpaceX is recruiting a natural gas trader to build and lead an in-house trading team, according to job postings reviewed by Bloomberg. The role 'focuses on physical and financial natural gas trading' and is based either in Cape Canaveral, Florida, or Starbase, Texas — not the traditional trading hubs of Houston, Calgary, or Stamford, Connecticut. Remote work will not be considered.
The hiring move follows a string of energy-infrastructure announcements that underscore how seriously SpaceX is treating its fuel supply chain. Earlier this month the company said it plans to build its own gas-fired power plants to support the electricity requirements of a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility it is developing in Texas with Tesla. SpaceX also plans to build its own gas pipelines and is even exploring drilling for natural gas.
'Huge investments to develop our own propellant and bring it to the rocket,' SpaceX president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell told CNBC in June, describing the scope of those commitments.
The fuel rationale is straightforward: SpaceX's Starship rocket uses super-chilled methane — the primary ingredient in natural gas — combined with liquid oxygen as propellant. Controlling the commodity from wellhead to launch pad is not a luxury; for a company flying rockets at the cadence SpaceX targets, it is a logistics imperative.
SpaceX is not alone in this pivot. Meta and OpenAI have recently signaled plans to enter power trading as their own energy footprints expand. OpenAI is separately hiring a power-trading lead for its data center portfolio. Surging demand from data centers and new factories has driven broad appetite for new gas-fired generation capacity across the technology sector.
The numbers come first. What SpaceX is assembling is not a side project — it is a vertically integrated energy operation spanning trading desks, pipelines, power plants, and potentially drilling rigs, all in service of a chipmaking campus and a launch program. That is a capital commitment of a scale few industrial companies attempt, and it reflects a calculated bet that owning the supply chain beats paying market prices at the margin.
For free-enterprise observers, the story is instructive: when a private company faces a genuine cost problem, it solves it with capital and ingenuity rather than a subsidy request. SpaceX is not asking Washington to build the pipeline or guarantee the gas price. It is hiring a trader, breaking ground on plants, and moving. Capital rewards clear rules — and companies that write their own.
