GE Vernova has hired Claire McDonough, Rivian's chief financial officer, who will join the energy tech company in November and become CFO on Jan. 1, succeeding Kenneth Parks, who is retiring. Parks will stay on as an advisor after McDonough arrives.
Rivian shares fell more than 6% intraday Friday after the announcement, while GE Vernova shares declined about 3%. Investors and analysts pointed to Rivian's lack of a clear long-term successor as one factor weighing on its stock.
Derek Mulvey, Rivian's VP of finance, is expected to serve as interim CFO after McDonough leaves. The company has not named a permanent successor.
Cullen Rogers, portfolio manager of the Wedbush ReturnOnLeadership U.S. Large-Cap ETF, said the market's sharper reaction to Rivian reflects the visibility of its succession planning. 'Markets don't just react to who's leaving; they react to how visible the succession plan is,' Rogers said.
McDonough joined Rivian as CFO in January 2021, months before its $13.7 billion IPO that November — the largest U.S. IPO of that year. She also helped negotiate Rivian's technology joint venture with Volkswagen, which agreed to invest up to $5.8 billion.
Rogers called that dealmaking experience 'a transferable skill set, not a personal one,' suggesting it should carry over to her new post at GE Vernova.
Morningstar senior equity analyst Seth Goldstein expects Rivian to stay on its current financial course, working toward profitability and positive free cash flow as it ramps up production of its lower-priced electric SUV. Morningstar has raised its fair value estimate for Rivian to $22 a share from $20.
Goldstein credited McDonough with a record of cost discipline. 'During her time at Rivian, McDonough proved to be a finance leader with a focus on cost discipline,' he said. 'I view this as an asset at any company.'
Elsewhere in the corner office, Jessica Fischer will step down as CFO of Charter Communications effective Oct. 15 to relocate for another opportunity, with Kevin Howard named interim CFO. Julia Brau Donnelly is leaving as CFO of Pinterest effective Oct. 30, with Vikram Naidu stepping in as interim principal financial officer. Michael Grasher was named CFO of Teladoc Health.
Separately, a Mercer QuickPulse survey of 1,001 U.S. organizations found employers plan average 2027 merit increases of 3.2% and total salary increases of 3.5% — roughly matching 2024-2026 levels, a fourth straight year of moderate raises. High tech (3.8%) and banking (3.7%) lead industry budgets.
The numbers come first. A 6% intraday drop is not sentiment — it is capital pricing risk in real time. Rivian's board now faces a straightforward test: whether the company built bench strength across its finance team or let expertise concentrate in one office. The next two quarters, as Rogers noted, will answer that question in the only currency markets respect.
For GE Vernova, the hire is a vote of confidence in proven dealmaking and cost discipline — qualities that translate across industries because they are, at bottom, disciplines of capital allocation, not personality. Public markets reward that kind of portable competence, regardless of the ticker attached to it.
