A Triassic Predator Resurfaces in Brazil

The numbers come first: 240 million years old, lost for more than two decades, and now formally described as a new species. Silescelida acristata — a small, slender reptile that once prowled the ecosystems of what is today southern Brazil — has just been published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports, and the implications reach well beyond one fossil bed.

The specimen was recovered from Dona Francisca, in central Rio Grande do Sul, from rocks belonging to the UNESCO Quarta Colônia Geopark. The research was conducted by scientists at the Quarta Colônia Center for Paleontological Research at the Federal University of Santa Maria (CAPPA/UFSM), in collaboration with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS).

Before Dinosaurs, Before Crocodiles

Silescelida acristata lived during the Middle Triassic Period, roughly 240 million years ago — a world still recovering from the Permian–Triassic extinction event of approximately 252 million years ago, the most devastating mass extinction in Earth's history. That catastrophe wiped out much of the planet's life and opened ecological space for new animal lineages to diversify.

The species belonged to the archosauriforms, a group of reptiles that gave rise to the archosaurs — the lineage that eventually produced both crocodiles and dinosaurs, including birds. Silescelida acristata was neither a dinosaur nor a crocodile, but it was closely related to the forms that preceded both groups. In size, it was comparable to a small alligator, moving on all four limbs and likely preying on smaller animals.

One of its most significant anatomical features is the femur, or thigh bone. The animal's legs were positioned in a more semi-erect posture — lower on the body rather than splayed to the side. Researchers note this configuration allowed for more efficient locomotion and represents an early step in the anatomical changes that would later prove fundamental to the success of archosaurs.

A Geographic Surprise

Phylogenetic analyses suggest Silescelida acristata may be related to the Euparkeriidae, a rare and poorly understood group of archosauriforms. Until this discovery, fossils associated with that group were known primarily from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Finding a related form in South America significantly expands the known geographic distribution of these animals and suggests they were far more widely spread during the Triassic than the fossil record had previously indicated.

The Fossil That Went Missing

The discovery carries an unusual backstory. Part of the fossil — precisely the fragment that preserved essential provenance information — was accidentally lost for more than two decades. It was not until 2022, during a technical visit to the PUCRS scientific collection, that researchers located the missing piece. That rediscovery made it possible to confirm the specimen's origin and formally describe it as a new species.

The name itself encodes the story: Silescelida combines words associated with 'silence' — a reference to the long period the fossil lay forgotten — and 'leg,' a nod to the limb material that constitutes the primary preserved portion.

Why It Matters

This is what rigorous, institution-driven science looks like when it works: patient fieldwork, careful curation, and the intellectual honesty to revisit a collection and admit a fragment had gone unexamined for twenty years. Brazil's fossil-rich interior continues to deliver data points that reshape the global understanding of vertebrate evolution. South America, it turns out, was not a peripheral stage in the story of life on land — it was central to it. Capital, in science as in markets, flows toward places with clear rules and productive ground. Rio Grande do Sul has both.
