In July 2026, a raccoon named Jimothy turned an Instagram post into a cultural moment. The clip amassed millions of views and thousands of comments, and Seattle's city government followed up with an official proclamation in his honor. By early August, the Seattle Mariners had issued a custom Jimothy trading card ahead of their game against the Detroit Tigers at T-Mobile Park.
What made Jimothy stand out was immediately visible: an unusually short body and tail, and a curved back. Although he has not been officially examined by a veterinarian, observers believe he has a form of a rare cervical vertebral malformation known as short spine syndrome — a condition documented in a handful of dogs in which vertebrae fail to fully develop, crowding organs into a smaller space and creating potential mobility problems.
A Brain Built to Adapt
Kelly Lambert, a neuroscientist who studies raccoons and rats, wrote about Jimothy's case for The Conversation and Fortune. Her research offers a concrete explanation for how an animal with such a condition could survive in the wild.
Raccoons, Lambert notes, have exceptionally high neuron densities resembling those of small primates. Her lab also identified the presence of von Economo neurons — specialized, fast-conducting brain cells typically associated with emotional, social and internal processing in humans. The raccoon forepaw, meanwhile, occupies a disproportionately large share of the motor cortex, much like the human hand. That neural investment in dexterity, Lambert argues, gives raccoons like Jimothy behavioral flexibility that most wild animals simply do not have.
The baseline odds are already steep. Up to half of raccoon kits die before leaving the natal den. Those that survive typically live only two to five years in the wild, even though the species can reach around 12 years in captivity. A disability compounds every one of those risks.
The Mother Factor
Lambert points to a second variable: maternal care. Raccoon mothers raise their young as single parents — fathers play no role, and mothers frequently relocate litters to protect kits from the threat of other males. Nursing typically ends around 16 weeks, but young raccoons often remain with their mothers for up to nine months, a period Lambert describes as something close to homeschooling. Raising a kit with special needs, she writes, likely demands extra energy and patience on top of an already demanding workload.
That combination — a cognitively sophisticated animal supported by an unusually attentive mother — is Lambert's best explanation for how Jimothy made it this far.
What the Numbers Say
The raccoon brain story is not purely anecdotal. Toronto reportedly paid roughly US$24 million to develop raccoon-proof trash bins, a figure that speaks to the species' problem-solving reputation in a language any taxpayer understands.
