Sporting Gijón Parts Ways with Winger Queipo After 117 Appearances

The Spanish second-division club and homegrown forward Dani Queipo have mutually terminated a contract that ran through June 2027, freeing the 23-year-old to negotiate with any club.

Gijón, Spain — Sporting Gijón and winger Dani Queipo have agreed to cancel the contract binding them through June 2027, the club announced Friday, closing a four-season chapter for one of the side's own academy products.

Queipo, born in Oviedo in 2002, joined Sporting's Mareo football school from Xeitosa while still competing at youth level. He made his first-team debut on August 13, 2022, in a 1-1 draw against Mirandés, and went on to log 117 official appearances across four seasons, scoring six goals. His first came on January 22, 2023, against Zaragoza.

The club issued a statement thanking Queipo for 'his work and behavior at all times,' adding that the player 'has represented Sporting's values' since arriving in the academy. The language was warm, the decision was mutual, and the timing was deliberate.

Sporting framed the departure as part of a broader squad restructuring ahead of the 2026-27 season, with the club actively managing both inbound and outbound moves before the summer transfer window closes. Queipo now enters the market as a free agent, carrying no transfer fee and no contractual obligations — a clean slate that could attract clubs operating on tighter budgets.

The announcement came minutes after Sporting fell 1-0 to Celta de Vigo in a preseason friendly in Vilagarcía de Arousa, with Hugo González scoring the only goal in the second half. The squad returned to Asturias afterward to resume preseason training at Mareo from Monday.

CEO Times take: Squad restructuring in European football is, at its core, a capital-allocation exercise. Releasing a homegrown player with two years left on his deal — rather than carrying the wage cost or waiting for a fee — reflects a management team willing to make hard balance-sheet calls early. For Queipo, the free-agent status is leverage: no club needs to negotiate a transfer fee, lowering the barrier for any interested party. The market has already voted that roster flexibility, not sentimental continuity, is the asset worth protecting heading into a new campaign.
