Gravelines, France — Electricité de France SA is confronting an unlikely adversary this week: jellyfish.

A 'massive influx' of the marine creatures forced EDF to shut three reactor units at its Gravelines nuclear power plant on France's northern coast and reduce output at a fourth, according to regulatory filings cited by Bloomberg. The combined loss amounts to 3.2 gigawatts of capacity — pulled offline at precisely the moment forecasters are projecting temperatures near 40°C across parts of the country.

The disruptions began Monday. Two of the affected reactors are scheduled to return to service by Wednesday night. The remaining two units, which together account for 1.8 gigawatts, could stay offline through the end of the week, per the same filings.
