The numbers came in fast on Saturday. A Chinese humanoid robot crossed the 100-meter finish line in 9.39 seconds at the opening of the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing — besting the 9.58-second world record set by Jamaican sprinter Bolt in 2009.
Before the official opening even began, a humanoid robot built by Chinese smartphone company Honor had already logged 9.32 seconds in a pre-event trial, at a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second, the company said.
The standing high jump told a similar story. A humanoid robot cleared 2.88 meters, surpassing the human world record of 2.45 meters set by Cuba's Javier Sotomayor in 1993 and more than tripling the 0.95-meter best recorded at last year's inaugural edition of the games.
The five-day event, now in its second year, is hosted at the National Speed Skating Oval built for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Organizers said more than 2,000 humanoid robots are participating across 51 events and more than 1,000 competitions, including running, table tennis, soccer, weightlifting and tug of war. Sixteen countries are represented, among them Germany, Japan and the United States.
The games opened the same week Beijing held the 2026 World Robot Conference, where companies showcased around 3,000 products, including humanoid robots.
China manufactures the majority of the world's humanoid robots. The competitive pressure has not gone unnoticed in Washington. Last month, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission announced a ban on imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, citing national security — a measure that directly targets Chinese manufacturers. The Pentagon recently added Unitree, one of China's leading humanoid robot makers, to its list of companies it deems to have ties with the Chinese military. Beijing has pushed back on those accusations.
Experts caution that humanoid robots remain largely confined to demonstrations, performances and research, and that mass real-world deployment is still some distance away.
Spectators at the event expressed a mix of awe and unease. 'At first, I wasn't very accepting of artificial intelligence. I was even a bit resistant to it, because of the possibility that it might replace or displace humans,' said Li Yanfeng, an education worker and Beijing resident. 'But now that I see this development is unstoppable, I decided to come and take a look.'

The scoreboard in Beijing is a strategic document as much as a sports result. China has turned a robotics showcase into a geopolitical signal: its manufacturers lead in volume, its engineers are closing the performance gap with human biology, and its government is willing to host the spectacle on an Olympic stage.
Washington's FCC ban and the Pentagon's Unitree designation are the right instincts — capital and technology transfer carry real security costs. But bans alone do not build competing supply chains. The market has already voted on where humanoid robots are being made at scale. Closing the gap will require the kind of deregulation, private investment and manufacturing incentive that free enterprise, not bureaucratic restriction, delivers best.
